“Popular Transport, Digital Commons and Decarbonization: An Environmental and Climate Justice Perspective”
In an age of climate change, curbing growing global transport emissions is a key focus, especially in the car-dependent Global North. Yet, in cities across Asia, Africa, and Latin America most people use popular transport modes ranging from minibuses to rickshaws and motorcycle taxis. These privately owned mobility services function as public transport, enabling people access to services, opportunities and livelihoods; however they tend to be highly polluting, prone to crashes and poorly managed and regulated with high levels of informal labor.
Despite the ubiquity and importance of popular transport, investment flows tend to be carbon intensive, favoring car oriented development and despite the obvious inequity, ignoring the need for investment in popular transport improvements. Even with growing concern about the climate crisis and hence changing investment focus on mass transit and electrification, popular transport remains in the periphery. This is the case even though these modes often enable climate resiliency but are at the same time particularly vulnerable to climate change impacts. This talk explores the emergence of a paradigm shift in transport studies in part ushered in through leveraging digital technologies, data commons and community engagement to build knowledge of popular transport and highlight and address this poorly recognized and addressed global set of environmental and climate injustice issues.
Speaker - Dr. Jacqueline M. Klopp
Jacqueline Klopp is the Director of the Center for Sustainable Urban Development (CSUD). She is a research scholar who explores the intersection of sustainable transport, land use, air pollution, and climate in cities with a focus on accountability, technology, power, and governance. Klopp is the author of numerous academic and popular articles on land and the politics of transportation infrastructures in an age of urbanization within climate and ecological crisis.
