Challenges and Opportunities in Emerging Economies

Around 68% of road transport trips in cities in emerging economies rely on informal modes like mini-bus taxis, tuk tuks, and bike taxis. These modes are crucial for mobility, moving millions daily and providing jobs for millions more. Yet their informal status often excludes them from global decarbonization efforts. In some cities, they generate up to 40% of transport emissions. Applying the same decarbonization strategies used for formal public transport to these modes could cut global emissions by up to 4%. In her lecture, Andrea will explore the challenges and opportunities in transitioning to modern, electric, and inclusive transport systems that embrace these widely used services.
